Exit

The first year of pioneer planting started in 2015.  In 2016, that process will be continued onto another large piece of the land that is located right in the center, as it continues to support and maintain the previous years’ plantings.

As we can see in the map above, the dry season (January – June) is focused on maintaining existing planting, performing earth-sculpting on the land and gearing up the nursery for the large planting season ahead.

Dry Season 2016

  • All the test plots and the pioneer establishment that was planted the previous year will need to be maintained during the dry season.

Earthworks

  • X2, X4, TP7, ML5
    • Some extreme slopes were left in this area after the extraction process and we would like to have the bulldozers knock them down and even out the area to create a more natural rolling hill pattern.
    • Specifically, knocking the material in X2 into the hole at the base of TP7, and pushing the material in ML5 towards TP7 as well.
    • A contour road, catchment drain and a few ponds will be constructed and placed in the contours that run around Clay Hill 1.
      • Detailed survey and design work will have to be done as that process progresses.
  • By that time, the extraction of the rest of Sand Hill will be completed.  As the machinery works its way down the hill, it will carve slopes and terraces into the hillside for the final grade.
    • This will be ready for planting as soon as the rainy season commences.
  • CH2 has a number of valleys and ridges that need to be surveyed for potential catchment dam locations.
    • One location has already been identified and is shown on the map.
    • There are many piles of rejected material at the location from the extraction operations. This should be moved to SL1 for future use as road base.
    • There are also a number of mounds and gullies which should be graded out to mimic more natural features in the landscape and allow for a more successful replanting program.
  • CV1, CV2, CV3 – Windbreak CrescentsWindbreak with vegetatioon_1200
    • Connecting CH1 with CH2 in three windbreak mounds across the central valley will help us to build the protected environment for our permaculture orchard.

  • CH1
    • A contour road, catchment drain and a few ponds will be constructed and placed in the contours that run around Clay Hill 1.
      • Detailed survey and design work will have to be done as that process progresses.

Rainy Season 2016

The pioneer planting phase will start in all the areas that are in green above.

Planting Patterns

Depending on the specific plot, either the permaculture orchard pattern, extreme slope planting pattern or the heavy slope planting pattern will be applied. In all cases, this year will see the pioneer plants being established according to the process that was laid out in the respective planting patterns.
